Welcome to the abode of Sree Guruvayoorappan.
Chembai Sangeetholsavam- A Carnatic music festival held in Guruvayur in memories of the great Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar who was a wholehearted devotee of Lord Guruvayurappan.
Let’s take a look at a little history.
The music lover Chembai had suffered a stroke in his youth. Then at the mercy of Guruvayoorappan, who was disrupted by noise, got cured and later he went to Guruvayoor Ekadashi’s day.
Chembai accepted disciples, irrespective of caste, creed, creed or the poor or the rich. And later he received many endorsements.
He won the National Award in Fifty-eight. And also Seventy-two Madras Music Academy Musicianship honours.
Chembai has been conducting this festival in Guruvayoor on his own for about 60 years.
He used to invite all the great Carnatic Musicians to perform in the temple town, and in the course of time, the scale of the festival rivaled the Thiruvaiyaru Thyagaraja Aradhana, recognised as one of the most important festivals.
The Guruvayur Devaswom decided to take charge after his death in 1974 and renamed it as Chembai Sangeetholsavam in his memory.
Every year there will be about 2000-2500 musicians participate in this festival and it is held for about 12-15 days ending on the Guruvayur Ekadasi day when all the musicians sing five favorite songs- the Pancharatna Kritis of Thyagaraja.
A group of performances marks the end of the festival on the night of Ekadasi. Then these are the five most favorite songs of Chembai—
- Vathapi Ganapatim ‘(Hamsadhwani)’
- Rakshmam Saranagatam ‘(Natta)’
- Paavanaguru Pavanapuradeeswara ‘(Hamsanandi)’
- Mamava Sadaajanani ‘(Kanada)
- Karuna Cheivan Entu Thamasam Krishna’ji Yaduk)
